Programme Development

Production, artistic and professional work

Riksscena carries out extensive professional and artistic work in collaboration with a wide range of partners.

On these pages, you can read about how we work with new productions, programme and talent development, as well as the diversity of traditions we present.

Riksscena’s programme includes more than 60 events of our own each season — from January to May, and from August until the beginning of December.

Our programme profile encompasses a broad range of genres rooted in different traditional forms of expression: from traditional fiddle music and joik to large ensemble productions and innovative performing arts, club nights and our own festival concepts, improvisation and newly written music, children’s concerts and dance parties.

At a time when folk music is influencing and shaping many different music genres, we are able to present a programme that is highly relevant and of a high artistic standard. Playful concepts, broad collaborations and large-scale gatherings, a strong social profile and a commitment to new stage productions characterize the programme at Riksscena.

Among our regular series and concepts are Folk på Torsdag, Tuvas Blodklubb, LilleRiksen for families with children, Endelig Belg, Latinerkvarteret, Fyrispel and Husvarm.

Broad collaborative models with committed groups, organizations and venues throughout the city and across the country have become an important key to the development we are now experiencing. Riksscena produces a number of mini-festivals and large-scale events:

  • The pols dance festival OsloP is a collaboration with Bygdelagssamskipnaden BLS.
  • Norse-Gaels Folk Fest fills the venue with leading musicians from the Celtic tradition.
  • Dans Dans Dans is a ten-day folk dance festival organized in collaboration with Sprang, NU, FolkOrg, SFF, BLS and organizers throughout the city.
  • Klangen før fela celebrates the earliest musical instruments and is produced in collaboration with Norsk lur- og bukkehornlag, Kvedarforum, Langeleikforum and Juoigiid Searvi.
  • In the Norge Rundt series, different valleys and traditional regions take centre stage in a mini-festival featuring dance parties, concerts, courses and talks.
  • Skattekista på Schous is a family festival celebrating cultural treasures from around the world, produced in collaboration with Samspill.
  • Heimelaga is Riksscena’s courtyard festival, featuring market stalls, arts and crafts, music and dance.

In addition, Riksscena collaborates with a number of festivals and presents concerts and performances as part of Ultima, Oslo World, CODA Oslo International Dance Festival, Masahatfestival and others.

Folk dance is social dance, where live music is closely connected to the dancing. At Riksscena, you can experience social dance parties accompanied by outstanding dance music.

Stage folk dance is an art form undergoing exciting development, and at Riksscena we both produce and present some of the leading work in the field. Read more about our work with folk dance here.

Folk dance is experiencing a wave of renewed interest, both in Norway and internationally. This is reflected in our programme, with dozens of dance events ranging from traditional rural and old-style dances, youth events and Tuvas Blodklubb, to stage performances and new productions, family performances and international dance concerts, as well as dance courses and post-concert dance sessions.

Through the festivals Dans Dans Dans and OsloP, many different partners help bring folk dance to Riksscena and throughout the city.

Riksscena places a strong emphasis on children and young people, and our audience is getting younger all the time!

Every other Sunday, families with children can experience concerts and performances as part of the LilleRiksen programme series. We also host several larger family events:

Skattekista på Schous is a colourful family festival featuring dance, music, activities and food from around the world. Tolvmannadagen is a Forest Finn family event, while FolkelarmUng showcases a range of new performances for children and young people.

Dance parties for children and young people have become a great success, and through our talent development programme Folk Sessions, we work to develop young performers. We also collaborate with children’s groups and educational institutions within our field.

Riksscena produces and co-produces a number of performances for children. Many of these go on to have a life beyond Riksscena, touring through DKS and festivals throughout the country.

Folk music and dance are living traditions that are constantly evolving.

Riksscena actively contributes to innovation within our fields as a producer and co-producer, working in collaboration with the independent sector and other partners. We provide resources and support for approximately 25 new productions each year, ranging from concerts to full-scale stage productions.
